Valley of the Temples (808) 239-8811
When a death occurs in a hospital or nursing home, the staff will notify the proper authorities. If a loved one was in the care of a hospice program, a hospice representative should provide family members with instructions.
In other situations, such as when a death occurs at home or in the workplace, a family member or co-worker should call 911 and if the deceased was under the care of a physician, the physician should be notified.
After calling 911...
Please notify our funeral home so we may assist you. Our mortuary telephone number is (808) 239-8811. Our funeral professionals will be able to answer your questions and provide guidance during this difficult time.
You should also notify family members, friends, and clergy or other spiritual advisors.
If your loved one wanted to be an organ donor, inform the hospital staff or the organization to receive the donations.
The first call to the funeral home lets our professional staff know that a death has occurred. While you may ask the funeral director any questions at this time, we will discuss the arrangements in detail later when we meet at the funeral home.
During this initial call, the funeral director will gather information necessary to coordinate the transportation of your loved one to the funeral home of your choice. The funeral director may ask several questions, including whether your loved one made any prearrangements and whether it is permissible to embalm the decedent. The director will schedule a time for us to meet at the funeral home and discuss what information you should bring at that time. For your convenience, a checklist of information is available by clicking here.
When you visit the funeral home, the funeral director will guide you through the entire arrangement process, explaining how you can create a memorable personal celebration of your loved one's life. The funeral director will also provide a list and assist with financial decisions.
The arrangement process may include preparing and filing the official death certificate; scheduling the location, date and time of services or events; selecting a casket, urn or other items; preparing an obituary notice; scheduling vehicles; and selecting pallbearers. You may also sign necessary authorizations or make arrangements to have them signed by the appropriate family members.
Please bring up to fifty photos, music or memorabilia so that you and your funeral director can discuss how you would like your loved one to be remembered. Most people today are choosing to personalize the funeral services for their loved ones.
For example, a favorite song, pictures of a gathering place, even a favorite activity can all become part of the service. Our funeral directors will listen and assist you in planning a loving tribute that captures the spirit of the person whose life we will honor.
To learn more about personalizing the service, please read the Personalization section of this Web site. The funeral director will discuss personalization with you during your arrangement conference.
If you choose interment, you will need to select a grave space, lawn crypt or mausoleum space and will want to choose a memorial or monument. There will be a professional service fee for the interment.
If you choose cremation, remember that you can plan a visitation and funeral ceremony to be held before the cremation. Another option is a memorial service to be held after the cremation with the urn present and/or a display of photos and other items that illustrate the life of your loved one. You also have memorialization options at the cemetery, including permanent placement of cremated remains. Your funeral director or cemetery family service counselor can explain all of the options available to you.
