Esther Giles Murphy
On May 2, 2019, a fierce spirit left this world. Esther took her last breath in her beloved Kane’ohe home, in view of the Ko’olau Range, holding the hands of her daughters. Though petite in appearance, Mama was a big presence with quick wit, intelligence and a strong independent streak. Her love of history, combined with her adventurous nature, resulted in journeys to Greece, Turkey, Italy and numerous other countries – always on the lookout for vestiges of ancient communities. At the same time, as an astute observer of current events, her insightful perspectives were enlightening to those of us trying to make sense of the world. And her trademark sense of humor added a dimension to her perspectives that we will sorely miss. Born in Florida, Esther traveled the country before settling in California with her family. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, she moved to Hawaii in 1970 with her youngest children. She then worked downtown at Hawaii Business Machines and enjoyed a drink or two at Territorial Tavern. Reading, playing Scrabble and watching Jeopardy were among the activities she enjoyed – all adding to her substantial knowledge base. She was always ready with the meaning of an obscure word or how to spell it! She had a long life but it wasn’t long enough for us. We are so grateful to have many memorable examples of her character and courage. She is survived by 3 children, Stephen, Shannon and Dana, 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren as well as her brother John Giles (Charlotte) and numerous nieces and nephews. Inurnment on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 10am onsite at Valley of the Temples, Ocean View Terrace. Aloha Nui Loa Mama.
