The Byodo-In Temple has been honored with a Priority Mail stamp released earlier this year by the U.S. Postal Service.
Announced in the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the USPS stamp was issued on January 21 and is now available nationwide. A colorful illustration of the temple at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park commemorates the Byodo-In Temple’s 50th anniversary.
The temple, built in 1968 to commemorate the centennial of the first Japanese immigration to Hawaii, replicates a smaller-scale concrete version of a wooden Buddhist temple located in Uji, Japan that dates back to the middle of the 11th century.
The Postal Service commemorated the issuance of the stamp with a special dedication event that was held on Tuesday, January 23 at the Byodo-In Temple.
