The Byodo-In Temple has been honored with a Priority Mail stamp that will soon be released by the U.S. Postal Service.
Announced in the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the USPS stamp will be issued on January 21 and available nationwide on January 22. A colorful illustration of the temple at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park commemorates the Byodo-In Temple’s 50th anniversary.
The temple, built in 1968 to commemorate the centennial of the first Japanese immigration to Hawaii, replicates a smaller-scale concrete version of a wooden Buddhist temple located in Uji, Japan that dates back to the middle of the 11th century.
The Postal Service will commemorate the issuance of the stamp with a special dedication event at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23 at the Byodo-In Temple. This event is free and open to the public.
Those in attendance will be able to purchase Byodo-In Priority stamps and have them hand canceled for free with a special pictorial postmark.
