Alan Lawrence Freeman's Obituary
We celebrate the life of ALAN LAWRENCE FREEMAN, born in San Luis Obispo, California, who found his peaceful rest in Honolulu, Hawaii. Alan filled 70 vibrant years with energy that seemed as boundless as the ocean he loved.
From his earliest days Alan thrived in the water, becoming a competitive swimmer and later a long -distance athlete who swam the Hawaiian Islands ocean waters that he loved. He shared that skill by coaching and mentoring young swimmers, many of whom became competent long-distance swimmers.
In 1973 Alan began an active military career serving in Hawaii. He later continued eight more years in the ROTC Army National Guard Reserves; achieving the highest-ranking officer award. Being stationed in Hawaii for three years sparked a lifelong bond with the islands, and he chose to make them home for his final twenty-five years, surfing, swimming, and living the outdoor life he treasured.
Those who knew Alan saw a spirit that was determined, hardworking, supportive, and resilient. He lived by action, not words, teaching perseverance and joy through every splash and stride. We honor Alan’s long-lasting friendships to many lifelong friends he stayed close with throughout his life.
Alan is survived by sisters Haila Hafley-Kluver (Clark Kluver) and Carol Kwan (Mike Mintus), two nephews, Shawn Hafley and David Kwan, and two nieces Emily Purdon and Andrea Kwan, and five grand nephews and three grand nieces.
We honor Alan’s lasting ripple on the people he guided and the waters he cherished.
