Felipa (Fely) Asuncion Serra's Obituary
Felipa (Fely) Asuncion Serra was born on April 25, 1935 in Koloa, Kauai. Fely was the youngest of 5 children born to Victorio and Juana Asuncion. After attending Koloa schools, she accompanied her mother to the Philippines to visit her oldest brother and family. While there she attended school in Batac, Ilocos Norte and the University of Manila High School where she played competitive volleyball and embraced being the ‘Hawaiiana’. After graduation, she enrolled at the Colorado State College of Education at Greeley (now known as University of Northern Colorado) at the age of 16 years. After graduation she returned home to Hawaii to teach at Castle and Farrington High School before calling McKinley High School her second home for over 30 years. As part of their Language Arts department, she taught Speech, English and ESL (English as a Second Language). She was McKinley’s Speech Club advisor and led her Speech teams to several state tournaments. She was also actively involved in the school’s popular Drama and theater program. She loved teaching and bringing the best in her students, and she was honored to be asked to guide dozens of student teachers as their cooperating teacher by University of Hawaii school of Education. She loved her family, friends, teaching, traveling and music. She had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing. Her many activities through the years included, the Hawaii Speech League, Delta Kappa Gamma, Pacific Speech Association, Ronald McDonald House, Filipino Choral Group, St. Philimena Church and Hawaii Filipino Women’s Club. Fely was preceeded by her son Daniel (Buddy) Serra III and survived by her children Louise (Guy) Yeager and Darren (Lori) Serra and 3 grandchildren, Samantha (Christopher) Kendall, Kyle Serra and Jake Yeager, and 2 great-grandchilden. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded by her siblings Vicente Asuncion, Pedro Asuncion, Mauro Asuncion, and Rizalina (Rose) Liberato.
