Herbert Aina Mahi Pahumoa Kamake'eaina Jr.'s Obituary
Herbert ʻĀina Mahi Pahumoa Kamakeʻeʻāina Jr., born October 27, 1948, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on January 15, 2026, at his home in Lāʻie Maloʻo, surrounded by his beloved ʻohana.
Known to everyone simply as Mahi, he was a man of the land and the sea. Mahi was known for his deep love of fishing and hunting, skills passed down from his father, and for the quiet joy he found in playing ʻukulele and singing. A man of very few words, he let his actions speak through his dedication to family, his respect for the land, and the way he lived simply and steadily.
Mahi’s last occupation was as the groundskeeper at Kahuku Medical Center, a role that reflected his lifelong connection to caring for the land and serving his community.
Throughout the community, Mahi will be remembered for his quiet presence, his generosity of knowledge, and his unwavering love for fishing, hunting, and playing music on his ʻukulele, traditions he proudly carried forward and shared with the next generation.
Mahi was preceded in death by his father, Herbert ʻĀina Pahumoa Kamakeʻeʻāina Sr., his mother, Hazel Rose Van Giesen, and his beloved wife, Amy Ann Puanani Kamakeʻeʻāina, known to all as Pua.
He is survived by his seven children: Frank Colleado (Nettie), Kai Colleado (Cheryl), Pua Kaneshiro (Calvin), Māhealani “Mahi” Mello (Jeff), Paulo Kamakeʻeʻāina (Shannon), Hōkū Kamakeʻeʻāina (Keliʻi), and his son David Colleado, deceased, who is survived by his wife Lisa. He is also survived by his sisters, Ahmu Nihipali, Blossom Fernandez, and Hazel Kea (deceased), nieces and nephews and by a loving family of 61 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on February 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hauʻula (Ma Kai Chapel). 10-11:30 viewing, 12-1 program, 1-2pm Kaukau & Kanikapila.
