Melvin D. De Costa's Obituary
Celebrating the life of Melvin Daniel De Costa, 71, of Kailua, who passed away at his home in Kunia on October 26, 2014. Mel attended Kailua High School and he continued his education at Honolulu Community College, where he received his Associate Degree in Police Science. He then went to Chaminade University and earned his Bachelor’s of General Studies, Minor in Business Management, Major in Justice Management and his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Mel was always a strong proponent of education and made it an in integral part of his career.
Mel retired from the Honolulu Police Department in 1989, after 27 years of service. After retirement, he started his business, DC Investigative Services, Inc. He then worked as Director of Security & Safety at Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Director of Security at Kahala Mall Shopping Center and recently Director of Security at Chaminade University with Securitas. Mel also was a part time instructor at Honolulu Community College and an adjunct professor at Chaminade University.
Three days before his passing, on October 23, 2014, at the 30th Annual Law Enforcement Security Awards banquet, Mel was awarded the prestigious “Top Cops Lifetime Achievement Award” for 2014.
Mel is survived by his wife, Rochelle De Costa; daughters, Deidre (Tim) Harrison, Pualani (James) Todd, Noilani De Costa; hanai daughter, Kanoe Cobb-Adams; step-daughter, Michelle (Charles) Caouette; step-son, Roman Kaai; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Harold De Costa; and sister, Barbara Long.
Visitation to his funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.; service to begin at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at 1:00 p.m. at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park
