Thomas Benito Manalo's Obituary
Born October 6th, 1926 in Lahaina, Maui, Passing December 1st, 2019 in Kaneohe, Oahu. Served in the U.S. Army and fought in World War II. He was a fought as a boxer for about 14 years on O’ahu and the Big Island of Hawai’i in both the feather-weight and light-weight classes, winning the Light Weight Championship March of 1949 in Kohala on the Big Island. Worked many years as a foreman during the construction of many buildings and businesses on 4 of the 8 major islands, but he was very proud to be a part of building Aloha Stadium and his place of worship Kailua Assembly of God (AOG). His membership with Kailua AOG started on May 16th, 1982, although he started attending years before becoming a member. He served many years on the church board, he ensured the church maintenance and upkeep, and proudly served as the President of the Men’s Ministry for many years. He loved to volunteer, children events, community events, but one sticks out and it was his willingness to travel and serve others on Kaua’i to rebuild homes, schools and businesses after Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
To know Thomas, “Papa” or “Uncle Tommy” was to truly understand family everything and everyone is family, he has a deep genuine care for others, friendship, dedicated service, joy and laughter. He always did his best to ensure everyone around him smiles and laughs. If he told you that he loved you, you can believe that he meant it,
Thomas is survived by children, Cindy (Thomas Sr.) Leary, Tierra (Patrick) Williams; Siblings, Alfonso (Pauline) Manalo, Fidel Manalo, Isaac Manalo; 8 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be on Thursday December 19, 2019 at Valley of the Temples Chapel. Visitation at 8:30 am with service to begin at 9:15 am. There will be a burial to follow at 11:00 am at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.
