Stanley Che Keung Au
STANLEY CHE KEUNG AU was born on September 18, 1929, in Hong Kong. He was the youngest of six children of Wan Han Au and Fook Oi Ng. He and Pui Lan Fong, his wife of 69 years, have four children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Cars were his first passion. Stanley was a trained automotive mechanic and became a bus driver at age 19. He navigated the double decker bus through busy city streets of Hong Kong. To take care of trouble-makers on the bus, and sometimes having to give chase, he studied martial arts extensively. He learned Wing Tsun Kung Fu from master Yip Man. Around 1970, he introduced Wing Tsun to Hawaii and taught for many years. A lifelong enthusiast, Stanley practiced Wing Tsun every day well into his 80s. At 27, Stanley left his young family in Hong Kong for Canada. Career opportunities were scarce especially for minorities in the ’50s and ’60s. To provide for his family, Stanley worked steadily, traveled the country for work and adventure. He went deep sea fishing and deer hunting with new friends in his spare time. From coffee shops, chain restaurants and luxury hotels, he learned on the job cooking and food preparation. In the summer of 1965, he was reunited with his wife and four children. In the fall of 1967, the family immigrated to Hawaii. Stanley retired after 15 years as mechanic from Oahu Country Club in 1996. In retirement, Stanley took up gardening with his wife. They had had some really good harvests, which they shared with family, friends and neighbors. Stanley enjoyed eating, and always had a healthy appetite for fresh seafood and fresh produce. Friday, March 15, 2019, Stanley had a good, productive day. In the evening, sadly, he had to be taken to the hospital after a stroke at home. He was surrounded by his family before passing peacefully in the night on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.
