Celebrating the Life of Harold L. Rice.
Born on February 27, 1922 in Canton, County of Fulton and State of Illinois where he lived until 1929. His parents were Norman Lester Rice and Martha Lee Carter. Harold was the first son of two children. His younger sister is Helen.
He earned the following degrees:
1944: AB Chemistry, University of Illinois, minor in German and Chemical Engineering
1945: MS (Equivalent) US Naval Reserve, Electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
1949: PhD Organic Chemistry, University of Wisconsin, Sugar Chemistry
1949: Post-Doctoral Research, University of Illinois, Chemistry of Fulvenes
After graduation, he began a career as following:
1994 - 1951: Assistant Professor Chenistry, Washington State University, Pullman WA.
1951 - 1964: New Product Specialist, research chemist and technical personnel recruiter, Dupont Co., Wilmington DE.
1964 - 1967: Science Advisor, Ford Foundation for Mexico and Central America and Northern South America.
1967 - 1970: Professor, Industrial Engineering, Stanford University. Palo Alto CA.
1970 - 1978: Research Officer, Science and Technology Bureau, Agency for International Development, Washington, D.C.
1978 - 1985: Nutrition Advisor, Asia Region, Agency for International Development, Washington D.C.
1986 - 1990 and again in 1994 + 1995: Professor, Public Health Nutrition, University of Hawaii, Manoa. Honolulu HI.
1990 - 1992: Chief of Party, Bangladesh Food Policy Project, International Food Policy Research Institute, Dhaka Bangladesh.
Harold retired in 1992 to Kaneohe, Hawaii.
He was married to Muk Lan Leung on January 8, 1990.
He was a member of Alliance Bible Church.
Harold served in the U.S. Navy. Active duty USNR, 1943-46, Radar Technical Officer, fire control radar, Electronic Field Service Group Navel Research Laboratory, Anacostia, MD.
Harold enjoyed many hobbies during his retirement. Wood work, bird watching, reading, dancing and sailboarding just to name a few. A scientist at heart, he continued to enjoy his love of observing and recording Kaneohe rainfall levels and bird migration patterns.
Harold's work took him to many exotic places around the world. When asked once by his daughter which was his favorite place to live in the world, he said he really enjoyed living in Mexico but of course there is no place like Hawaii.
